There were other factors, but having rivals was part of it.


Jack Swarbrick wanted to maximize how many live football games they would play in major media markets. The ACC presented Boston, Pittsburgh, New York (via Syracuse), Atlanta, Raleigh, and Miami. We had Washington, DC when the decision was made, but they get DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia with Navy already.
