The Director's Cup is nice but not the most important metric


Right now, WVU is ranked 26th, just ahead of Duke and Alabama. UConn is 65th, just ahead of Boston College and Wake Forest. Georgia Tech is wallowing around at 185th. So what? It is nice to do well in the Director's Cup, especially if you're Stanford and have an endowment the size of Jupiter, but many schools follow a different philosophy. And the numbers above will even out a bit as spring comes. But does anyone think Georgia Tech is a drag on the ACC?

If you want to argue that WVU sponsors a different set of sports than most ACC schools, that's fine. But so did Pitt and Louisville and other recent ACC invitees. WVU has added and dropped sports to fit in the Big 12 while keeping some non-traditional programs - like rifle and gymnastics - that it has sponsored for years and years. If WVU ever joined the ACC - which should have happened years ago but quite possibly never will - then it might and likely would add and drop sports to better fit the ACC profile. That's what schools typically do, and WVU has the resources to do it.
