It is unlikely that Auburn will ever leave the SEC unless something

major happened between 'Bama and them to create some serious bad blood. Penetrate in what sense? If you are talking about recruiting, then I wouldn't underestimate the ACC schools. FWIW RichRod (when he was at WVU) had success recruiting players from AL. According to Rivals Top 30 for AL (2017), Michigan, Louisville, Stanford, Tennessee, Ole Miss, LSU, UCF, UAB, UGA, Vandy, South Alabama, UF, and CMU appear on the list. So the top football recruits in the state are not signing with just 'Bama or Auburn. If you look at the previous years, then you will see similar trends as well.

Another reason UAB came to mind is it has been quietly (relatively speaking) building a solid basketball program over the years. Plus, I think academically UAB either meets or is pretty close to meeting ACC standards. Besides, if the ACC wants to boast it is the best overall conference, then it shouldn't be scared to compete against the best. IMO if the ACC has an opportunity to expand into SEC Territory (especially along the Gulf Coast), then it should seriously consider it especially if that part of the country is expected to see significant growth in the future.
