In the study do you know if the phone talker had the phone

to his/her ear or using a hands free device? I agree with you that driving while distracted is dangerous. I know MD and DC have passed laws where drivers can only talk on a cellphone using a hands free device. I think VA was looking into passing a similar law, but I am not sure if it was ever passed. It sounds like even the auto industry is making bluetooth/hands free capabilities a standard feature on most newer models.

Something I find surprising is I don't think anyone has compared the distraction levels of talking on a cellphone while holding it against your ear vs. talking on a cellphone through a hands free device vs. talking to someone in the car. All 3 scenarios could be potentially distracting and lead to an accident. If someone has done the research, then I haven't found it on Google yet.
