Even though Byrd is a big deal at UMD, it appears Bobby

has a better winning percentage than him.

Bobby Ross (39-19) = 67.2%
Curley Byrd (119-82) = 59.2%

Knute's had a winning percentage 88.1% which places him 4th best winning percentage. One reason it is easier to overlook where Knute's winning percentage ranks is because 1st-3rd only spent 1 or 2 seasons at Notre Dame. Whereas he spent 13 seasons.

I am not taking away what Byrd meant to the school because he meant a lot both on and off the field. In terms of percentage, it appears that Jerry Claiborne may have have the highest at 67.5%. If Ross, Claiborne, or even Friedgen (winning percentage of 60.0%) had spent 23 years as UMD's HC, then there is a good chance all 3 would have ended up with a lot more wins than Byrd. In fairness to Byrd, majority of the seasons the team played fewer than 11 during a season. 1911 the team only played 2 games which doesn't appear uncommon for that era of college football. 1930 the team played 12 games (7-5) which I find interesting because I don't think too many teams were playing that many games back then.
