I don't know if players always trash talked but I think it
Escalated exponentially about the time "Neon" Dion Sanders, Warren Sapp, Miami or the "U" run came along. To old school players "trash talking" wreaked of an inferiority complex but to the younger guys it was just their way of motivating themselves or an attempt to get into the other players head & they also liked the additional camera time. Deangelo Hall and Ronyell Whitaker were both a product of that era.
It seems as if the trash talking era has mellowed some but maybe I'm just more used to it now.
