They are actually moving more to highly paid anchors
Started with Van Pelt getting his branded, solo SportsCenter show late night, and having the freedom to mix in his thoughts, radio bits (Stanford Steve) and opinions as he decides. Then last month or so, they did the same with the 6:00 PM SportsCenter, having new exclusive hosts Jemele Hill and Michael Smith intentionally bring in pop culture for a good portion of the show. Not sure what their salaries are, but some site had her at $1M with this promotion. Now they're giving Mike Greenberg the 7:00 am - 10:00 am window exclusively to make that SportsCenter show more of a Today show. He's getting $6M per year and Van Pelt is at $4M per year. It looks to me like the sports highlights are indeed moving to their digital platforms, with pop culture and more politics soon filling up the TV time. For all these cuts yesterday and the talent pay, it's pretty clear they axed 50-80 smaller salaries so in part they could better compensate their top-10 guys. I'm sure their net is positive with all these changes, but they have definitely embraced the "highly paid anchors" mantra.
