Re: Over/Under on the United Airlines Settlement...8 Figures?

I negotiate a lot of deals, and I see situations like this every now and then where a company will offer a large dollar figure because the negative PR is costing them so much more than the plaintiff would ever be entitled to. I assume they put out a big number that they viewed as big enough to get this done and wrapped up immediately, with confidentiality agreements and probably even a drafted "United did the right thing" statement pre-drafted for him.

I believe he had not filed a lawsuit yet, so the deal would have been offered as "this is what we are willing to offer you now, with no lawsuit filed. We will not offer this much again." I would think the number would have to be at least $5 million, but probably $10 million. That is more than enough to change a person's life, yet a fraction of what United was losing in bad PR.

The math on his side, if he's smart, has to do with the lawyer's cut. If he was smart about this, his lawyers were entitled to a much smaller cut before litigation is filed.
