Assuming the Playoff becomes champion only, is there a possibility
that Notre Dame may still not join right away because it wants to wait and see how things play out? Your post below got me thinking there could come a day when the bowl games go away. The most likely scenario could come when the power conferences form their own division level within the NCAA.
Since NCAA bylaw states it can only recognize 1 champion per sport per division level, then the NCAA could now recognize the power conference champion as a NCAA champion. It would also mean the NCAA would regain control of the postseason. Since the NCAA uses a playoff for DI-FCS and the other division levels, then there is a good chance a playoff would be used for the power conference division. Depending on how many teams get to participate in the first NCAA Playoff, it could go from champion-only to including at-large teams. Independents would qualify as an at-large team since they wouldn't receive an automatic bid.
