Notre Dame will remain an independent....

until they do not have access to the football playoff. At that point, the situation and future is uncertain. They could opt to become a conference member, they could opt to go the legal route along with possibly some other G-5 schools of challenging the NCAA structure under legal grounds or they could concede that they really are no longer a playoff caliber program in the future and have not been for quite some time now and elect to maintain their independence. The last option is really no option because their scheduling will take a hit and their recruiting will take a hit and the money(both TV and donations) will eventually become a problem. Top kids will not be interested in playing where they do not have a chance to compete for championships and TV and donors will not be interested in funding second tier kids to play second tier opponents. The reality is, the longer Notre Dame remains bad in football erodes their ability to remain independent. Historically the argument could be made that the legitimacy of a playoff and championship could be questioned if ND were excluded from the pool, however, the longer they are not a factor when they still have access makes their future inclusion not necessary. They haven't been legitimately relevant in football in a long time despite a few gifts to BCS Bowls.
