I think the ND deal has turned out well for the ACC
The reason most people seem to dislike the deal is because they feel we caved and did not require ND to join for football. But, the fact seems to be that ND was simply not going to do that. They want to stay independent. I say let them stay independent. I think independence is more negative than positive for ND football, they are not the power they once were in football. However, the ACC got a deal where ND plays 5 ACC teams each year. We make money off of ND football through these matchups. And ND does have good athletic programs for other sports. There is really only three negatives that I can see. One is the lack of unity throughout the conference since ND doesn't play football. But there are other sports (not as important as football) where some ACC schools do not field a team. The second is ND getting a shot at an ACC bowl game. (that sounds like a really bad part of the deal, but it may actually pay for itself by giving an extra incentive for bowls to align with the ACC. Also, there are plenty, actually, to many, bowls to go around these days.) Three, it takes away the incentive for ND to join the ACC in football. But at this point, I don't care. ND can stay independent. The ACC doesn't need ND football, and they have no intention of joining a conference. If they are one day forced to join a conference, then maybe we let them in. ND football's reputation is living off of past history. Maybe, they can become an elite program again. But for the past couple of decades they have not been an elite program, and they may need conference membership to become elite. They remind me of Miami: Next year they will be back. Sure they will. They are decent, but not elite. Just like Miami. I'm not sure any team in college football has under-performed, compared to their reputation, over the past 30 years more than Notre Dame.
