It's always a good day to be Hokie Matt!
Seriously, anyone that was paying the slightest bit of attention back then could see our play: dump everything we had in to football to try and get in to a stable, all sports conference. Once there, start to grow our 50-years-behind-our-peers athletic program with the fruits of that conference membership.
Given the results we've seen, both in ACC membership and in athletic success, I defy anyone to gainsay that strategy. I mean, it was evident then. It seems even more obvious in hindsight.
Unfortunately, most of the Hoos engaged in those topics back then just weren't very smart. The rest were so interested in stroking their fragile egos by putting Tech down (that correlation is a them thing, not a regular person thing) that they were physiologically incapable of engaging in a discussion of VT's athletics program with any sincerity. They'll say they didn't care, but that's bunk. They cared a lot. Just not about facts.
Anyway, the proof is in the pudding. We won the Commonwealth Clash. They lost.
