Athletics is what the ACC was after when adding Louisville.

The ACC was positioning for the ACC Network which required stronger football and basketball. Louisville was the best option out there at the time that was available, and they have stronger athletics in both football and basketball as well as Olympic Sports than Maryland who was leaving. In 2016 Louisville was 29 in Directors Cup to Maryland at 59, and that is with Louisville sitting out the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Louisville was not added to boost the USA Today Academic ranking of the ACC. They were added for the strength of their athletics department and their brand. Maryland is ahead of Louisville in the USA Today. Maryland was 11th out of 15. Louisville is now 15th out of 15. Maryland is better, but they weren't exactly boosting the ACC academic scores.
