The success of the Big East basketball should be no surprise. The "catholic seven" who formed the league have played one another since the late 1950s. Those schools also played Xavier and Creighton often. Butler was the only outlier to become a member. There is a very large tradition to the league and natural rivalries built in. Boston College was and still is a natural rivalry of Providence College and still plays them today every year. UConn has had discussions about returning as their football program is going broke. They are looking for membership for football in the mid major conference and returning to the big east.
