What makes UL work is no pro team competition.

The recognition by Tom Jurich that Louisville can and should market itself as the home team for the City and Metro Area of Louisville rather than just the University makes them work. Whomever was there before Jurich probably didn't do that.

There is no local professional sports franchise to compete with, so UL gets all of the corporate sponsors, the media attention, and the local fan base looking for a local team to support whether college or pro.

Pittsburgh and Miami don't have this luxury. The others I see that do are Syracuse, West Virginia, and Connecticut. I would not be surprised to learn that the recent advertisement campaign by Boston College trying to market itself as Boston's College was influenced by consultation with Jurich. It could also be consultation with Syracuse who sells itself as New York's College Team. Either way, that's what they need to do.
