The UVa-VT connection makes it difficult to leave.

Hey, I'd love to be in the SEC. But when the 2003 deal happened to bring VT to the ACC, the two schools became close partners. VT won't do anything to harm UVa's existing conference. So IMO, we aren't going anywhere unless UVa gives us their blessing.

I wish it weren't so, but that's the realpolitik of the situation.

We can't just get up and leave our current conference like a Mizzou or Maryland.

The only way I see VT leaving and UVa staying is if ND joins and the ACC doesn't want a mega conference and offers license to schools that are desirable to other conferences like Tech and NC State (where the ACC already has a stronghold in the state) to explore their options if they desire to leave.
