He's a former college baseball player from a baseball family, but there seems to be so many variables involved. This hire isn't an almost sure thing like Fuente or Buzz. Both had very good D-1 success before coming to Tech. To be honest, getting lacrosse's John Sung was really a no brainer since he had success building or rebuilding every program he took on. Whit needs to find himself the John Sung of D-1 college baseball. That will take a lot of homework. Maybe Whit has been searching for a head baseball coach since early spring, maybe longer?

Whit is going to have to find a coach who can recruit the region and who can develop pitching. Salary will have much to do with this hire. I expect him to hire to coach who has taken his team(s) to the NCAA tournament the past few seasons or a highly talented and respected assistant head coach from one of the elite programs. I'm expecting our next head baseball coach to come from mid-major. I think most on this board are expecting the same. I'm sure that there are dozens of coaches who find the Tech job to be very attractive. ACC membership, a beautiful renovated baseball stadium with improved practice facilities, and a school with a good academic reputation and loyal fan base.
