The concept of conference network was not on the radar in 2002.

The thought process was to create a conference football championship game. It was visionary move made in the 90s by Roy Kramer of the SEC, and the ACC wanted to copy it.

The concept of a Conference Channel was started by Jim Delany of the Big Ten when he got frustrated with ESPN during their rights negotiation in 2006. He made it happen, although it struggled for about 6-7 years not making any money. It has ultimately been successful, but it didn't start out that way. Jim Delany was the visionary for that, and now the ACC is copying that but more specifically the SEC network in format.
