UVA wasn't strong armed into supporting VT.
Dr Casteen was in VT's camp from day one. He knew what VT's exclusion from a real, viable sports conference could do to VT and Virginia's southwest. Remember, before becoming the Hoo president, he was in charge of Virginia's Council of Higher Education. He knew how important a strong VT was to both the Commonwealth as a whole and to the southwest region of Virginia in particular.
What Warner provided was political protection to Dr Casteen. I think Warner made sure there would be no revolt by members of the UVA BoV against Dr Casteen.
