and just because a coach is associated with a search I think more details are necessary to understand the true nature of the contact. For the concerns you voice it is just as easy to play it off from Buzz's perspective when he talks with a recruit. I am not naïve enough to think Buzz will finish his career at VT, however, if you believe the information out there a lot of factors outside of, or at least in addition to, money are on Buzz's radar.

IMO, it is always smart to listen if for no other reason than to get an idea of where the market currently resides. Options are always good leverage in negotiations with your employer and, as long as protocols are followed, Whit seems like the kind of boss that supports that approach. I think he gets his reputation as a good boss by treating others fairly and recognizing that is the best way to keep people engaged as opposed to discouraging consideration of other opportunities for career advancement.
