I think this is the main reason, Guzan can bypass the midfield on gk's

Even though the formation would technically be a 3-5-2 with Yedlin and Beasley playing wingback, it really functioned more like a 5-2-2-1 with two defensive midfielders, Arriola playing wide, Pulisic playing wherever he could get the ball, and Wood on an island.

Bobby Wood is both fast and strong, and Acosta doesn't distribute well so the plan was for Guzan to boot it to Wood who can hold up the play for Pulisic to get a pass in space.

The Bradley wondergoal was a godsend for Arena, had the US been forced to hold Mexico scoreless to gain a point the USMNT would've walked away with nothing.

Arriola was wasted minutes, if the US was planning on playing down main street I'd rather see a 2nd striker with Pulisic playing a true CAM, or see a Bedoya/Kljestan come in for some creativity.
