Yeah, for this kind of thing to work you would need schools

that have monstrous alumni bases that are going to follow their school - not miscellaneous fans looking for good basketball. Plus, with only 16 schools in the mix, there would still be a ton of good players that would go to NCAA schools due to the opportunity to play with much more significant media exposure and most likely better coaching and the product would probably not be quality enough to compete. Leaving the NCAA in the dust will only work if you have the P5 conferences come together and decide to over-ride the establishment. While they are the "haves" as opposed to the "have nots" the NCAA runs some risk the more they arbitrarily enforce NCAA violations and the more ridiculous those violations become.

Nothing against the HBCU either but part of their plight, as the author points out, is desegregation which was/is ultimately a good thing, right? Part of the reason they have not been able to remain relevant is that they have not found a way to pivot & change with the times. Personally I see it as a lack of management/leadership on that front and makes me wonder how the schools that have trouble maintaining a profitable athletic department could get it together enough to manage an entirely new league and also afford to pay these star athletes?
