If you are just talking about the HBCUs leaving the NCAA

then you are right it won't have an impact on the NCAA or VT. However, if enough non-power conference schools were to join the HBCUs (numbers will vary based on the sport), then it could have an impact on VT. The reason I say that is because VT will have fewer options for scheduling guarantee home games. I think VT (like most or all of the other power conference schools) do it in just about all sports. If there are not enough home games to go around, then teams will have to decide whether to play fewer overall games or more away games.

As far as whether the number of teams leaving matter or not, it could depending on which teams left the NCAA. For example, the English Premier League has 20 clubs. If the Top 20 blue bloods in football decided to leave the NCAA to form their own pro independent minor league football league, then I think that could have a huge impact on the NCAA and even VT (if it wasn't 1 of the 20). Just imagine how DI college football would look if these schools were no longer in the NCAA: FSU, Da U, Notre Dame, Clemson, 'Bama, UF, LSU, UT, Texas, OU, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, USC, TAMU, UGA, Auburn, UCLA, Wisky, and Penn State.
