My observation was based on the statement by Stockleybridge
about the NFL and the single helmet policy. It was not specifically derived from the article. Sorry for the confusion there.
The article mentions 3D modeling for the specific players head and then for fitting the helmet to the individual head. I would assume that to be through specific padding placement. One would think that the bulk of the cost would be incurred through the modeling process and perhaps custom padding manufacturing. Once the initial cost is absorbed, it would stand to reason that multiple copies of the same design would be similar to the current cost of a new standard helmet. That is simply a guess on my part though for what it is worth.
