Coincidentally they tried this back when I played high school ball
Our team used them some in practice but decided against using them for games. They had a 6 inch wide padded strip applied to the usual helmet material going from front to rear in the middle of the helmet, where much of the defensive players' hits come from. They did reduce the vibration a lot but the hits didn't generate the sound the coaches were accustomed to and wanted so they decided to go back to the rigid helmets everybody still uses. They actually looked cool too, with the helmets in white with a blue padded strip up the middle, to match our school colors.
