My understanding is below...


In a hypothetical situation, say you were given a 25% scholarship from Mason. Now say Szefc comes in and doesn't think you fit his model. He can say, "48, we appreciate the hard work you've put in but I don't see a future for you here in the baseball program. We are going to honor your scholarship but if you wish to keep it, you will be ineligible to compete in baseball games." If you accept this deal, the athletic department will still have to pay your scholarship, but it won't count against their limit. Kind of like a medical hardship waiver in football if your injury forces you to retire from the game.
