I have one and there are downsides (aside from initial cost)


1. Propane is up and running in 5 minutes, BGE (any ceramic) is a minimum of 15, more than likely 15-20.

2. They require maintenance. You have to clean the ashes out of the bottom. Depending on the brand you get, it can be a PITA to empty.

3. Expense of having to keep charcoal on hand and having a place to store it. Some purists don't like to reuse charcoal lump that's not fully spent... I don't mind it personally and do it every time. You'll get a lot more cooks on a tank of propane than a bag of lump.

Even with those, the ONLY thing I cook on my big ass propane grill is chicken breasts. Everything else goes on the egg, the smoker or the Blackstone.
