I agree - try a few out

I commute to work around 100 days a year and probably put on 50 miles a week outside of the winter. So I'm not a super serious biker, but after 5 or so years and around 13,500 miles, it's part of my life.

Try a few bikes and see what feels good to you. Pay REALLY close attention to what you like in a saddle (the seat). That'll be the most likely thing to keep you away from the bike.

I'm mechanically challenged - I've learned to do a lot of my own maintenance, but there are things I don't mess with and generally recommend having a shop you feel really comfortable with. Every now and then a really serious cleaning can make a big difference (I'm talking taking it apart, soaking the parts and putting it back together) and shops can be even better places to get advice than sportswar.com.

I'm almost exclusively a solo rider, but I've been wondering about that of late and thinking I should look for a group to ride with every now and then. Probably not that hard to do these days and something else to think about.

One thing I got right early on - I went pretty cheap with my first bike. I eventually broke the frame, but that was after 8500 miles and I knew what I wanted in the next one.

I've heard good things about the Treks. I've been happy with my Diadora (sp?). Again, unless you are going competitive (and maybe even then) pay attention to your seat!

And for heaven's sake light up your bike and pay attention to safety!
