If Wake-Duke and NC State-Wake aren't a "must," then
I am not sure BC-Pitt and possibly Pitt-Syracuse could/should be considered a "must" either. At least I can't find a compelling argument to justify the BC-Pitt "rivalry" as being more important than Duke-Wake or NC State-Wake. If anything the BC-Pitt "rivalry" is on par with the BC-VT "rivalry."
Even though history suggests both fan bases value the Pitt-Syracuse, it appears their fans may not consider it a rivalry, "The rest I could leave, including Syracuse-Pittsburgh, which despite the history, both fan bases seem lukewarm to the idea of any sort of rivalry." I have stumbled across similar posts over the years.
I guess it is possible the ACC paired them out of convenience and neither school wanted to rock the boat. Especially since Syracuse got what it wanted; being in the same division as BC. The Pitt-Syracuse game has been played every year since 1955, so it is unclear how the schools would have reacted if they had switched places when being assigned a division. Then again the ACC would need have needed VT's blessing to go that route because it would have meant pairing Syracuse with BC and Pitt with VT.
