If you look at the replay angle from the back of the other


side of the end zone, it does look like the half of the football away from his hands may have moved slightly. Then again it may be a photographic illusion. However, the part of the ball in his hands seems to remain firm even as he hit the ground and started to roll. I believe the way the rules were written basically asked "Did the ground aid in the catch?" If part of the ball appears to move slightly, then the initial reaction would be to say "yes" even though it may not have had any bearing in the situation because his hands were firmly under the other part of the ball and Coale made no visible attempt to re-position his hands or arms.

The Coale play may have truly been a case where "yes/no" was the correct answer, but 1 has to trump the other.
