Your logic is right

but there are lots of similar possibilities - and IMHO one of them will be the decider. Such as an 11-1 ND with a loss to say a top 20 versus an 11-2 conference champion with a couple of close early losses to OOC ranked opponents, but a top ten win in the CCG.

Once ND is out of NC picture, either by rule OR by common perception that they won't be chosen in cases similar to this - they will either join a conference or become a service academy type team. That is really cool traditions, national following, great history - but very rarely if ever relevant in NC picture.
