Honestly, I would consider VT to be a major brand.

However, it is possible that the networks only consider the "blue bloods" to be a "major brand." It wouldn't surprise me if some intern did research and discovered that certain schools generated the same TV ratings regardless whether that team was 0-11 or 11-0.

At least I think the term "blue blood" was coined back in the late 80s/early 90s. I believe there is some debate about which school is a "fringe blue blood," but I don't think there is any debate on which schools make up the core of the "blue bloods." I could be wrong, but if a school wants to be considered a "blue blood" or "major brand," then it probably will need to win multiple national championships and/or competed for multiple national championships (i.e. regular Top 5/Top 10 teams). Unfortunately for VT, the teams didn't start to do that until recently, so it is possible that VT is still carrying around the "new kid on the block" label. What isn't clear is when the media/public will allow VT to shed that label. Maybe when it wins a national championship or participates in multiple national championship games?
