An arrangement could be worked out where one of


their out of conference games would count as an ACC game. In the old days of the ACC U Va was allowed to count its game against VT as a conference game when they did not play enough ACC games. Other ACC teams may have had similar arrangements. Back then basketball was the big deal/money maker and the football side was almost a loose alliance of teams.
