UFL is a case study in how difficult it is to stand up a league
The UFL lasted only four year (2009-2012). They sparked a bit of interest because the five teams were in non-NFL areas.
According to material online, the teams would have accrued 5-10 million dollar annual losses if they drew 20,000 fans. The leagues business model was to offset those loses with a TV deal, which never materialized.
The UFL was also different in that it wanted to compete with the NFL. The lesson being nobody competes with the NFL.
