I visited Tennessee this past spring. Our tour guide noted that the athletes have their "area". If you're a UT football player, you can basically do what you want.

I'd like to believe Virginia Tech is different. I know had classes with football and basketball players, and they were legitimate students.

That said, if you're lucky/good enough to be a scholarship athlete, you also benefit from a phenomenal support structure including academic advising and tutors.
