My '74 class ring has the stars and bars on it. Over 40 years later it's difficult to justify that choice. RE Lee and 'Stonewall' Jackson versus Washington, Jefferson, and Madison. All were slave owners but the historical context is vastly different. Lee and Jackson were leaders in a failed insurrection attempting to defend the institution of slavery. Most of the memorials across the south were erected during the Jim Crow era as a clear message about the sentiment of the ruling class. Confederate leaders can be acknowledge in an historical context but memorials to the defenders of slavery have no place in 21st century America.
