If you generally don't have a problem, what difference does it make?


The affect to you is the same.

Personally, when I do it it's because I feel safer in the "car" lane. For example, I just did it this morning because I was going downhill pretty fast and didn't want to get doored by any of the cars parked along the bike lane. At higher speeds, it just feels safer with all the extra room.
