They're compelled to give it lip service

and it probably does matter, but I can't believe much...if all were equal between 2 options, sure, a president would choose the better academic institution to share a conference with...but it doesn't take much inequality in $$$$ to trump academic concerns

I'd say the only conference where academics *really* matter is the Ivy League...because people actually think of that as an academic term, not an athletic one.

I really don't think any one hears "ACC," "Big 10," etc., and thinks about academics at all. Go ask 10 people on the street what they think about the ACC...even if one is an academician, I doubt they say one thing about academics.
