that Stanford has close to 40 NCAA programs. Some of those programs have very little competition (i.e. few competitors) which makes it easy to compete for and win titles. The B1G has many universities with close to 30 or even more than 30 athletic programs; thus resulting in their higher rankings. At least that was my take on it.

What you mentioned seems like it would play easily into Stanford's hand as well. I'm sure that, and the combination of large sums of money + a lot of programs can only equal a high level of success.
