NCAA vs Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma.

This Supreme Court Case in 1984 kicked off the modern era of realignment based on conferences wanting to add to their football television money. When conferences started negotiating their own television deals, they then started looking for additional members to maximize their deals.

Penn State may have been one of the first moves, but it was done because of this court decision and the Big Ten wanting to make more television money.
