It is. My 500 number was arbitrary.

But Stanford uses their financial aid package for the university generally to supplement scholarships in an above NCAA athletic scholarship limitations. They have the money and budget to do so. And they do it for 36 programs rather than 20-25 that many ACC programs have to cover.

Duke could do much the same stuff, but $22.4 billion goes a lot further than $6.8 billion. The key in my opinion is to build the Athletics Endowment to cover all of the scholarships that the NCAA allows. A school can do a lot towards the Director's Cup by just doing that much.

BTW, watch what happens with Cal-Berkeley. Ten years ago or so the Cal athletics department was in financial trouble looking to cut sports. Baseball was one. Stanford stepped in and bailed them out. Well Cal is in financial trouble again over their football stadium rennovation. It will be interesting to see if Stanford comes to their aid again.
