It's a balancing act to be sure
You can even look at the UFC. There are fans who are really into it. And if you talk to them they want to see fights between guys you've probably never heard of at some weight class you didn't know they had. So they want to appeal to them, but at the same time put out matches that grab the casual fan with big names.
One of the NFL's issues, and most sports for that matter, is trying to appeal to everyone. If you make your traditional masculine sport too family friendly you turn off those hardcore fans you've had.
Basically, when you try to please everyone you please no one.
