Besides not wanting to compete with football, I believe 1 of the reasons

given by MLS for going with the current schedule was the weather. Particularly the winter weather that is associated with the host cities of the more northern teams. Would enough fans be willing to attend a MLS game in an outdoor stadium in any of those wintery conditions? If not, then would enough northern MLS teams (or taxpayers) be willing to spend the money to convert an outdoor stadium into either a domed stadium or a stadium with a retractable roof?

I agree with you that MLS could easily adjust its schedule and probably should do it to improve its global image regardless of what happens to football. However, I am not sure if MLS is ready to tackle the weather issue and/or compete against the Winter sports.
