I am fine if these big name players (including US players) finish their
career in MLS because it helps to increase MLS's exposure. However, these players don't help with MLS's long-term development.
You are right about developing players that can play in any league. The problem though that if these homegrown players want to develop to benefit the USMNT, then they really need to go play in Europe against the best players in both league competition and UEFA competition (i.e. Champions League and Europa League).
An issue with CONCACAF is the lack of quality leagues. It is an issue because it prevents a tournament from developing into a CL or EL in terms of quality. I guess this is one of the reasons I want to see MLS switch its schedule and make some other changes (i.e. league no longer involved with allocating foreign players or trades, single table instead of conference where teams play everyone twice, etc) in hopes that more international stars in their prime sign with MLS clubs. If enough big names go to MLS, then maybe MLS could work out some sort of arrangement with UEFA to allow clubs to participate in the CL and EL. Also, if MLS gets to a point where it has 40 clubs, then I would like to see it go to a 2 tier system.
