Section 7 Post Game Thoughts...

(1) Lane Stadium & Virginia Tech puts on one heck of a great game atmoshphere. Walking back to car with random Clemson Fans who kept saying ‘wow’ wish we played VT every year. Babcock & VT Football operations A++

(2) Virginia Tech fans hunger for big games again in Lane. Neutral sites OK, but it was great the fan response to every positive play by VT. Even when Clemson was in control, Fans were engaged.

(3) Defense held Clemson to 24 Points, in spite of lack of Defensive Line Depth and one busted coverage play. YAC though are an issue, as Clemson backs/QB got quite a bit of yards post contact. -not sure if fatigue, technique ( lack of wrapping up) or opponent’s talent is cause—maybe a combo of all three.

(4) Mook is one of our best open field tackler right now. He’s grown into the WHIP/Nickel role. Whilst Stroman has established himself as best CB.

(5) Shegog’s play in the back of the end zone preventing a TD reception was sick. With limited playing time, dude makes the most of when he gets on field. Really wish Foster walked Edmunds up to DE, Slid Vinny inside and used Shegog as Backer on a few series.

(6) Running game/ RB Blocking has digressed. RB Committee approach has not progressed our offense. IF, Cornelsen’s offense is based on QB carrying the ball the most between ROP & QB draws & scrambles then believe QB JJ’s body is not big enough to withstand the beating. I’m not suggesting a QB change but re-evaluation of running game physiology as that element of our game is hurting our offense efficiency.

(7) Just a perception, but feels as if we throw away a down each series. It might be our youth in the skill positions or poor execution but seems every sets of downs on one play we gain zero yards. Again no data to back it up, other than feel during games in Stadiums.

(8) YAC, esp running plays are low. Not sure if players are worried of fumbling but single contact is bringing our RBs down vs bouncing off and getting a yard or two extra. This was an area Evans helped us last year.

(9) Recruiting matters...wow delta of team speed was huge. Big fast players made a difference, especially failed attempts to get to the edge on offense.

(10) Believe we have to let QB JJ grow some by allowing him to go to LOS and run the play vs stopping mojo & looking to sidelines for so long. At times it feels as if we cull our own momentum by doing this over and over.

That said, felt better about where VT program is now and heading vs how I did when Clemson beat us twice in the same season. (2011). Recruiting and Running game is key to our next step forward.

Let’s Go...Hokies!!!
Off to Chestnut Hill to beat the Eagles
