Ohio State Penn State have always had success in Maryland, DC, and ...
Virginia even before Maryland joined the Big 10. PSU pretty much owned New Jersey during the Joe Pa years and things really haven't changed for them since Rutgers joined the Big 10. My biggest concern with the Big 10 moving into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast isn't PSU and tOSU, but schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota having a new conference geographic region to recruit. Now those schools can say that they'll play football and men's basketball in the DC-Baltimore and NYC Metro areas.
That big gap between Charlottesville and Chestnut Hill/Syracuse is now Big 10 country with PSU, Maryland, and Rutgers as Big 10 members. That gap also happens to be the most populated region of the U.S.. Except for Penn State football, the other 2 Big 10 schools don't worry me as far as football is concerned. What concerns me is the new football recruiting grounds that were added to the Big 10 footprint. I'm just glad that the Big 10 didn't expand into Atlanta and Florida. The ACC has enough competition with the SEC. Adding the second most profitable conference (next to the SEC) would be bad news for the ACC. I doubt the Big 10 expands eastward if there is a next round of expansion. I see southwest expansion in their future, probably Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas,... Maybe the ACC expands northward with WVU, Navy, or UConn but I don't see that occurring for another 8+ years, if ever.
