Maryland is a basketball and lacrosse school.

It's to be expected that the fans would support any expansion moves that improve basketball and lacrosse. Syracuse fits that very well.

Maryland was strongly against the addition of Florida State when the ACC added FSU. They were pushing for Syracuse then.

Since all of the expansion moves since FSU have been to improve football, Maryland fans weren't happy with them. They did not like losing basketball games with tobacco road to play Pitt as a designated basketball rival.

An irony here is that they probably would have been happy with Louisville. And they would have been happy with Connecticut. But they have gone to a place where the basketball schools (Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin, etc.) are very overshadowed by football with Ohio State and Michigan.
