Soccer won't take off until current TV ad model changes

People often point out how soccer's boring for long stretches to a lot of people, but so is golf. Yet, the discrete nature of golf lends itself well to commercial breaks. No breaks in the action for 45+ minutes at a time, the TV money via ad revenue is never going to be there versus almost every other sport out there. Even the idea of persistent ads around the border of the screen (think like the Jumbotron at Lane Stadium) isn't going to be enough, because those don't stick in a viewer's mind like a real commercial does, so they won't pay as much for ad spots. Until that current structure changes into something else, soccer's never going to see the type of investment that you do with sports that have discrete periods of actions like football, baseball, basketball. That, or you'd have to soccer to change rules to allow for timeouts (both called and out-of-bounds like in basketball), quarters instead of halves, shorter games, but those are all far less likely to happen.
