No, your understanding just isn't correct. It doesn't matter if
they will eventually play in the NFL or NBA. Most American kids grow up dreaming of that. For example, Ryan Switzer had no idea that he would end up at 5'7". Probably all the way into high school he figured he would be 6' or taller. Even in college he probably hoped he would grow an inch or two.
He did not hit age 9 and say to himself and his parents, "I want to focus on soccer because I'll only be 5'7" when I grow up."
He said, "I want to play football because it's really cool, I can hit people, and the girls on my bus go nuts when I wear my youth league football jersey to school."
