I had my own epiphany while in Europe as well, 20 years ago.


I was in France for a while and on the public park fields, kids would just show up with soccer balls and play a pickup game. Just like kids with basketballs do in the US. It was at that moment I realized how far America has to go to become competitive.

It won't be until millions of our own youth are walking out the door with a soccer ball looking for a pickup game, just like the Europeans or South Americans do. It has to be an ingrained part of the culture of our kids to just want to play for the sake of playing, and not as part of some structured activity.
